we had long ago: what is wrong with the `--forward' option?

   The --forward parameter to patch doesn't behave the way we originally 
   thought, and what it does do isn't useful.  I believe it would be 
   possible to produce the desired effect with a bit of sneakiness, but for 
   now, it's probably best to disable it.
