thanks to Mark Wielaard's efforts, a recent patch to the GCJ tree has
been identified to have (indirectly) caused a problem building the CVS
version of the library. Mark's message and Roger's response can be

i'll attempt today rebuilding a GCC pre-this patch to check if it also
solves the problems i'm encountering.
