As far as I know this does not automatically make the software
nonfree. We have accepted that kind of clause for fonts, anyway
(Vera, OFL).

In summary, it seems the situation is: Its deemed free because it can
be worked around it 'with a simple hello world'. I find it kinda silly,
but that seems to be what it is.

Seems not exactly in the spirit of free software to me, but I see why it would be accepted. It's one of those free but annoying licenses, then.
