    INTRODUCTION:
    -------------

    Unigroup is pleased to announce our May 2011 meeting on Deploying IPv6.

    Unigroup had first presented IPv6 back in January 1996, and our speaker
    back then was Perry Metzger.  We are pleased to have Perry come back to
    Unigroup to present IPv6, now that it is more of a requirement, rather
    than "just a matter of discussion."  Perry is also known for presenting
    various NetBSD technical topics to Unigroup.

    The Unigroup January 1996 meeting announcement said the following:

      IPv4, the Internet Protocol Version 4 that has served our industry
      well for more than 15 years, is coming to the end of its useful
      life -- for one thing, its limited address space is almost used up.
      Industry groups are now actively designing its designated successor,
      IPv6 (also called IPNG for IP Next Generation, under the auspices of
      the IETF, Internet Engineering Task Force.

      Our January speaker, Perry Metzger, will report to us on what is new
      and different about IPv6 - with special reference to addressing and
      security enhancements in the new protocol.  Among other features,
      IPv6 will expand the address space from 32 to 128 bits -- enough,
      as Perry says, to allow us to "individually address every atom on
      the planet"!

    So now, another 15 years later, IPv4 has managed to last over 30 years
    (!!btw, so has Unigroup!!), and its address space has finally been fully
    allocated.  The time for getting serious about IPv6 is finally here,
    since its use is now mandated for certain Internet communications.


    Note: Our NFS talk has been postponed till September, so our meeting
    calendar has changed...

    Note: RSVP is requested for this location to make sure the guard
          will let you into the building.  RSVP also helps us to
          properly plan the meeting (food, drinks, handouts,
          seating, etc.) and speed up your sign-in at the meeting.
          If you forget to RSVP prior to the meeting day, you may
          still be able to show up and attend our meeting, however,
          we cannot guarantee what building security will do if
          you are "not on the list".

    Topic:  Deploying IPv6

    Introduction & Description of Talk:
    -----------------------------------

    The current version of the Internet Protocol, IPv4, has run out of
    network addresses after over 30 years of operational use. To correct
    this, a new version, IPv6, is now being deployed. In place of IPv4's
    32 bit address space, IPv6 features 128 bit addresses and a number
    of cleanups and simplifications to the IP protocol.

    Perry Metzger's talk will explain the differences between IPv4 and
    IPv6, discuss how the transition between the protocols is being
    conducted, and tell you how you can transition your own networks to
    IPv6.

    Speaker Biographies:
    --------------------

    Mr. Metzger was involved in the IETF's IPv6 standardization effort
    and is the co-author of several IETF RFCs.  He is the Managing Partner
    of Metzger, Dowdeswell & Co., an IT consulting company specializing
    in systems security, and is also a doctoral student at the University
    of Pennsylvania.

    been kind enough to provide us with review copies of some of their
    books, which we will continue to raffle off as giveaways at our
    meetings.  The publishers always ask that the persons receiving
    the books provide a review and/or feedback about their books.

    Unigroup would like to thank both companies for the support
    provided by their User Group programs.

    As always, all of the books will be available for review at the
    start of the meeting.

    We have some Solaris Related CD-ROMs from our friends at the
    local NYC Sun Microsystems Office.

                    then walk 1 block East and 1 block South.

 5. UNIGROUP INFORMATION
    --------------------

    Unigroup is one of the oldest and largest Unix User's Groups serving
    the Greater New York City Regional Area since the early 1980s.
    Unigroup is a not-for-profit, vendor-neutral and member funded
    volunteer organization.  Unigroup holds regular and special event
    meetings throughout the year on technical topics relating to Unix
    and the Unix/Linux/BSD User Community.

    Unigroup holds regular meetings planned for (at a minimum) the Third
    THURSDAY of Odd Months.  We generally try to hold Field Trip or
    Vendor Specific Meetings on the Even Months, although we do have the
    ability to hold monthly meetings at our regular meeting location.

    Planned regular meeting dates are (usually 3rd Thursdays):
      5/19/2011, 6/16/2011, 7/21/2011, 9/15/2011, 11/17/2011, 01/19/2012, ...
    Also watch for Special Event meetings and "Field Trips" to the
    facilities of local hardware and software vendors.
