Actually, what I am getting without a config file _is_ making
sense. What didn't make sense (and it showed) was the effect
of it - due to the missing config file things failed later on
rather ungracefully.

Phase 1 completed:
- Cleaner output on missing config file.
- Only show real PANICs on console (for EMACS ... should make
  Ian happier, too)
