It is not as you might fear... the version on which any one Mac OS
release (Tiger, Leopard etc) depends *is* insulated from regular
users for example the GUI will not show
/usr
which in /usr/bin contains
python -> python2.3
python2.3 -> ../../System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/
Versions/2.3/bin/python
pythonw -> pythonw2.3
pythonw2.3
Also, as far as I know, downloading and installing a new python will
normally not touch the above, and administrators can get the newer
python used by methods including those I referenced the wiki.
It is mainly when hackers have tried to forcibly remove or replace
the framework python that they made their Mac OS unstable and had to
reinstall.

I think that's a really dumb thing in in MacOSX:
IF the exact Python version is that important to standard
system well-functioning it better be well hidden from view
and not interfere with whatever the local administrator
wants their local users to use.
