That's clever advice :-))  It pulls in pretty much all the
packages one needs, indeed.

Not that I know of offhand.

It saves a bit of disk space and bandwidth on apt-get upgrade.

Yes, one surely can (and the install scripts do) install a
versioned desktop shortcut.
