IT WORKS ... SHIFT click ALREADY works :-)

We tried that in many ways but it didn't work, either it
didn't work at all or it did not work consistently across
platforms.

Try clicking into the field but "outside" the name ;-)

Personally, I'd also prefer the double-click-selects-whole-field
behaviour but I cannot get it to work reliably.
