That is one complaint heard often. GNU/Linux provided choices and freedom but 
put the layouting burden on the programmer who has to fight hard to get it 
right on every system, distro, window manager theme. WTF.

But that is for the layout part only. It is the same for the audio framework 
(also, oss, phonon, gstreamer, pulseaudio) WTF.

No wonder the Adobe got depressed when they had to write the Flash plugin.
Not to mention there is a million browsers engine, the same number of 
frontends.

Last but not least you can produced packages in a gazillon formats. deb, rpm, 
arch-packages, gentoo packages, autopackages. WFT.

Same goes for EMR but I will save that one for later :-)

This is the not invented here syndrom.
