On the Mac, a shell command of the following
form can invoke any .app:

What does the -a stand for ?

it allows to specify the application with which to open a file (if one is specified) and thereby bypassing what would have been its default application. It also allows omits having to specify the pathname to the application (although maybe the contents of /Applications are aliased from a /bin directory).
