In fact, no, it is Python itself which bails out:

"de" simply is not a valid locale definition.

Can you be more specific on this ? Apparently it also
starts with LANG=de_DE.

GNUmed itself will break down the locale definition to try
to find a transalation catalog:
es_ES.UTF8 -> es_ES -> es
Whichever is found (and returns a change when translating
the sentinel string) is going to be used.
