One good example of where you might want to do this is at the point where it is
decided to refer a patient to a consultant.
The decision to refer will often happen toward the end of a patient visit, or
it may occur following the review of results. The decision may be documented in
the soaP note of such a visit or review. However at the point of actioning this
referral, it can be very useful to start a new encounter of type
request for consultation
This approach …
- allows to formulate the content of the consultation request *inside* a
progress note
- makes it very easy, on choosing Write letter, to select this encounter (or
rows from this encounter) to go into the first part of the letter, and
- makes it easy to later review this content among the various journal entries,
saving the clinician to have to go poking around inside documents to find the
free-text entries that went into the document but nowhere else.
