Well, it sounds to me like you just messed up the two config files. If a
configuration file is needed and does not exist, the respective GNUnet binary
will create one. However, if you create a configuration file for clients and
then force the server to use it with -c, that won't work. Also, if you run
gnunetd as an ordinary user, it will not be able to
generate /etc/gnunetd.conf or access /var.

A fresh install of GNUnet doesn't have /etc/gnunet.conf nor a user's conf.
If a user tries to run gnunet-gtk (at first) a configuration file is created
but it won't specify the PORT or the GNUNETD_HOME and those vars needed for it
to run. It's not about "it doesn't work", it's about "it isn't simple for a
person that doen't know nothing about GNUnet to download the tarball, install
GNUnet and run it".

However, if you really just want a simple way to get GNUnet running, why don't
you use one of the binary packages? I've tried the debian package, and it is
really nice in that it pretty much does all of the setup for you.

It wasn't for me, but for a person running Slackware. And source instalation
should be made as trivial as possible.

Also, making things more user-friendly is always easier said than done. Do
you have any concrete suggestions?

Yes,: trying that the "first time generated gnunet.conf" is a configuration
that runs well in almost all systems (with stuff like adding "INTERFACE = eth0"
to it), making a "configuration GUI" and renaming "gnunet-gtk" to "gnunet" (or
something like that) for those who "want to try gnunet" but doesn't really know
which binary to execute.
