base fails to build using GNUSTEP_BUILD_DIR

Dear all,

I've tried to build base (03/22/2004 snapshot) using:

<<
. /usr/local/GNUstep/System/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh
GNUSTEP_BUILD_DIR=/home/dmardale/gnustep_build/core/base_build
make
>>

At some point I get the following:
<<
Making all for bundle SSL...
 Creating
/home/dmardale/gnustep_build/core/base_build/SSL/SSL.bundle/....
 Compiling file GSSSLHandle.m ...
 Linking bundle SSL ...
/usr//bin/ld: cannot find -lgnustep-base
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Am I missusing GNUSTEP_BUILD_DIR?
