BTW: is this really the case? I had the impression that its pretty similiar to OSX, expose only Aliases (aka symbolic links) to the user, but support "real" links internally.
In the case of Windows creation of such via the Posix APIs.


There was a discussion on this recently on one of the lists from people who are pretty knowledgeable about that. The basic answer was, yes, it really is necessary. Windows links aren't at all like any other links.
