I don't want to suspect it either, but it is a viable possibility.
Proxies do have an effect on the data going through. I admit, though,
that it's a long shot.
Since you say that the failure is intermittent for you, I think that
maybe Hotmail is doing the slow-migration thing again. In the past,
they've made changes to some of their servers and not to others,
probably as a sort of testing procedure. Gotmail would fail when
connected to the changed ones, and work fine with the older ones. I
didn't think that was the case before because none of the reports I got
mentioned intermittency.
It's still not a great theory, because I ought to be getting the error
with the same frequency as you, but I'm not getting it at all. But it's
a start.
