Eliminate a really annoying build glitch. All regression tests pass.
If you put -lgps in a link line, it's going to find the static library
first. This is a problem if you're building a shared librar you get
cryptic messages like
relocation R_X86_64_32 against `.rodata.str1.1' can not be used when
making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
