That only works if you know the exact vendor and version of your GPS.
Even the same GPS model number does it idfferently in different
firmware versions.

That is the data the GPS gives us, if we are lucky, so no other real
options

gpsd tries to support all we can.  The only reason for lack of support is
when we have no device available to test or no one interested in
doing the work.

A moving standard that real people can't look at is not much of a
help.

I see NMEA also as object oriented.  GPGSV is an object, GPRMC is an
object.  gpsd just tries to handle all the different objects and
components in one big mess.

The m8 series is pretty nice.  Then you get to the professional stuff
that does L2, L5, etc.
