[Groff] use of addftinfo

I am trying to figure out the purpose of addftinfo. I have read several
man pages for it and searched altavista and deja news. There doesn't seem
to be much information about it.

I am trying to right a short definition or purpose of the addftinfo
command.

The manual pages say "what" it does -- but why does it?

What is a real-life example of using addftinfo?

Is addftinfo only used behind-the-scenes by other tools?

Is it used by anyone or anything?
