Ted> Don't mix explicit pipelines and groff: groff is a program which Ted> simply organises the preprocessors and troff. Either use explicit Ted> preprocessors and troff (as in your first case) or do Ted> groff -e -ms file Ted> (the "-e" pulls in the 'eqn' preprocessor). See "man groff". The effect is exactly the same.
