Before we go further, are you deliberating invoking a defined string
using the macro syntax or would you prefer the string version?
$ echo '
> .ds one 1
> .ds two 2
> \*[one]\*[two]
> \*[one]
> \*[two]
> ' |
> groff -Tascii |
> cat -s
12 1 2
