I generally agree, \~ is indispensable. However in manual
pages, I use \<SP> instead. For nroff, the difference is
negligible anyway. Otherwise, I prefer to avoid a ~ in
the output with viewers that do not support it like e.g.
legacy Solaris troff. A manual page is a tool, not a work
of art.
