Folks, particularly mm folks.

I'm looking for a suggestion on how to approach this problem.

Consider the file

        .de xx yy
        .sp 2

And the command line
        groff  -mm

You would expect, and in fact get, no output.  -Tps  is the default.

BUT consider the command line

        groff -Tascii  -mm

You would expect the same but instead get ... warning: `yy' not defined


        groff -Tlj4  -mm  


        groff -Tlatin1  -mm warning: `yy' not defined

        groff -Thtml  -mm  

Output, but no error.

        <!-- CreationDate: Tue Sep  9 20:12:09 2008 -->
        <meta name="generator" content="groff -Thtml, see">
        <meta name="Content-Style" content="text/css">


The version of  contrib/mm/m.tmac  does not seem to matter.
I suspect the version of groff does, but the one that I know used to work
is from about the year 2000, so ...

I've not detected any obvious pattern, and am wondering how to proceed.
