Well, workaround for PAUSE could be to just create more 'slides', e.g. one for
each item...

What about something like LaTeX's Babel since my main need is to typeset
documents using Croatian language?

That I have to test - trying some 'demo' docs and adding Croatian native
characters (šŠ, đĐ, čČ, čČ, žŽ) didn't work out of the box...

However, I must admit that groff+mom' size makes it very attractive option.
