compiling a scheme module

i read through a lot of documentation and searched the mailing list archives, 
and still haven't figured out if guile can compile scheme modules.

i want to write scheme code (as well as c code), but to compile some of the 
scheme code beforehand, so it will run faster.  is that possible?

if so, how, and any pointers to the documentation (and urls) would help.
