Let's say, I want to install foobar-1.2.3 NOW in all of the computers
that belong to the class NODES.

I use Debian at home, but at work I use Red Hat.

Using apt-get or rpm is easy because if the packages are already
installed they won't be installed again, but I am being proactive
about some packages that are installed using shell scripts and don't
have this ability, I don't want cfengine to keep installing it over
and over again.
thanks for the advice.
