I do this with my laptops and there is no real problem. I have my
resolv.conf domain fixed to the College, even when I am at home,
and the only "gotcha" I know of is to make sure there is an open smtp
relay to send mail to. That means I have to use the ISP mail relay
rather than our college one. 

If you can't do that then you should send mail from the system somewhere
else or just keep it in "outouts".
