sorry!  that's my fault!
the anon cvs access has changed (and I never noticed that)

here's the correct procedure (http://savannah.gnu.org/cvs/?group=gengetopt):

export CVS_RSH="ssh"

cvs -z3 -d:ext:address@hidden:/cvsroot/gengetopt co gengetopt

indeed the first export wasn't necessary on my machine

I guess anon cvs repository hasn't been used much ;-)
