I doubt it. They are basically thin layers over shell/comint mode, and as
such, do their simple job pretty well (well, rlogin-mode does anyway, and
I'll make sure telnet-mode works nicely by the next release).

Actually, you don't -- shell-mode is rather nicer these days than term-mode
in line-mode (in Emacs 21 at least). The author of term-mode has expressed
some interest in trying to merge term-mode with comint though; then
perhaps things could be a bit more seamless.
