Forgive me for taking up space on this list to answer my own question.
Benjamin Pierce's spread.el (cf. Google groups) is plenty fast, and is
close to plain Lisp. So close in fact that it is kind of hard to think
of it as a spreadsheet. Indeed it makes me think "why not just use
Lisp". But in fact I'm happy with it for what I need.
