21.3.1 minibuffer yanking and "The mark is not active now"

In 21.3.1 if I paste in the minibuffer it prints out:
"The mark is not active now"
in the minibuffer for a few seconds or until I move the point.

This doesn't happen in cvs.  Is there a way to get rid of that message
displaying when I'm doing yanks in the minibuffer for operations such
as query-replace, or grep-find?

Upgrading to cvs on these boxes is not an option unfortunately.
