You give no info about encoding or TeX version (tetex, MikTeX). If you
use Unicode utf-8 (an `u' is shown to the left in the modeline), add the
line
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
to the preamble. If you use tetex you may have to install the `tetex-
unicode' package.
