Other than to force the reader to try and remember those ASCII codes, is
there any reason not use:

  (mapconcat (lambda (char)
               (if (memq char '(?\t ?\n ?\r ?\ ))
                   "[\t\n\r ]"
                 (format "[\t\n\r ]*%c" char)))
             string nil))
