Thank you for the suggestion. I've installed regex-tool and I have the
impression that it's a good way to become familiar with the topic.

I have found the rx function in Emacs 22 useful when writing elisp code that uses regexps. It makes the regexps much easier to read IMO. You can also use that to learn how regexp.
