Its never happened to me before either!

No I mean just what you did above.

On my sytem yes. The info browser knows how to open it with no
problem. It also opens
info /usr/share/info/gawk.info.bz2
opens it right up as does:
C-u C-h i /usr/share/info/gawk.info.bz2 <RET> in emacs
