Hmm. Can't help with that specific error.
I did this on my 7.10 machine:
$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.savannah.gnu.org:/sources/emacs co emacs
$ cd emacs
$ ./configure --without-makeinfo --with-gif=no --with-dbus=yes
--with-x-toolkit=gtk --with-rsvg=yes
and it works.
Have you thought about using Alexndre Vassalotti's Emacs23? I tested
it on one machine and it also works fine.
