Yes, that works.  Another oddity I just encountered:  C-u C-x = on a
backtick signals an error:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-type-argument characterp 4194400)
  get-char-code-property(4194400 iso-10646-comment)
  describe-char(193)
  what-cursor-position((4))
  call-interactively(what-cursor-position nil nil)
