I'm not sure how yank (C-y) is related to cutting but the basic cut and
copy commands are these:
C-w = kill-region ("cut")
M-w = kill-ring-save ("copy")
You may want to read these sections from the manual:
C-h r m Killing RET
C-h r m Yanking RET
