Does it help to add the following two lines to your ~/.emacs for the
GUI session?
(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(background-color . "black"))
(add-to-list 'initial-frame-alist '(background-color . "black"))

Yes, Emacs tries not to show you a combination of colors that would be
illegible.
