Yes, that is why I wrote it likely has something to do with ncurses or
terminfo; but I don't know much about these things.
But I could solve the problem with changing the above-mentioned lines in
~/.zshrc to:
if [ $(tty) ] && [ -z "$DISPLAY" ];
then export TERM="screen"
else export TERM="xterm-256color"
fi
