The first thing I should have done was, C-h v auth-sources .

The link to the customize variable interface puts in the .emacs file

 '(auth-sources (quote ("~/.authinfo.gpg")))
 
Earlier, I needed to put in

 (setq auth-sources (quote ("~/.authinfo.gpg")))

It works now but the Gnus UI is unforgiving should the passphrase be
mistyped it doesn't ask you to re-type it again.
