No staff

I wan't to typeset some music with no visible bar lines - but WITH pitch.
I can see three approaches:

Removing StaffSymbolEngraver:
  This confuses the stems and the beams.

Setting LineCount to zero:
  This works, but creates ledger lines from center of invisible staff.

Setting line-thickness to zero:
  How do you do that?

What can I do - i.e. how do i remove ledger lines or how do I correct stems and 
beams?
