You need to run it with option -I (edit in place) and with the required file which is usually gnubatch.hosts but doesn't have to be.
If you just run it "bare" it will take input from standard input (so you have to ctrl-D it) and spew to standard output.
The gbch-hostedit program doesn't look at the values in defaults.h it does its own thing.
