If you use g++ 3.4.0 or newer (g++ -v will tell) then read
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-3.4/changes.html
A recent textbook describing standard C++ should tell this, as well.

You have to use typename here like
typename list<T>::iterator aIter
Look for keywords dependent name, two-phase lookup.
