This should be a separate package using setup.py so that it can properly upload/publish to PyPI.

Additionally it'd be nice to have asyncio supported.

installed will probably be less total effort over the long term.  But it
could of course be in the same VCS tool with same hosting.

(The issue with packaging is that the base gsasl package should be
buildable without python, so there need to be two packages with separate
builds.)

Regardless, mine is just one opinion, so let's see what others say.
