problem building make from cvs

I am trying to build am unlabled tip revision of make.
I have:
autoconf 2.57
automake 1.7.3
gettext 0.11.5
When I type: autoreconf -i -s
I get the following error:
Makefile.am: required file `./README' not found
Configure.in:381: required file './build.sh.in' not found
Autoreconf: automake failed with exit status:1
I have ./README.template
and ./build.template
Can any one help.
