            I just tried this. But the compilation does not stop.

 

Is there any other way of achieving this?

Does the following (100% untested) modification work?

           for dir in `$(SUB_DIRS)`; do \
           $(MAKE) -C $$dir || (echo "ERROR" && exit 1); \
           done
