configure error in 2.1.28 in slackware 7, need help

Dear octave user or programers:

 In my slackware7, I try to compile 2.1.28
but after I type ./configure, I got

checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you 
must specify one.

what should I modify?  My c++ is egcs-2.91.66  , I think it should not be a 
problem.

any help is welcome
