If you look at load-save.cc in the src dir, there are some comments before 
read_binary_file().  They're actually not completely accurate though.  Just a 
few days ago I wrote some C code to generate binary files for all of the octave 
data-
types, and when I get back to my machine later today I'll post it to the list.
