I've not followed much of this sequence since beyond the last two notes 
to the mailing list; it's probably not
appropriate to continue the  conversation in this list beyond "here's 
my symptoms - what can I do to fix this?"

FWIW, I've compiled octave over the past 10 yrs under on various 
systems including Mac OS 8-9 (using
Tenon's MachTen Unix), Mac OS X (using Fink), Yellow Dog Linux, Compaq 
Alpha, and Solaris.  Each of
these systems tends to have it's own glitches and gotchas that require 
a bit of attention.  Unfortunately for
new users (and new upgrades), those of us* who maintain Octave can only 
speak of the machines we use,
so Mr. Eddelbuettel may only be able to say "Works fine under Debian," 
just like I can only say "2.1.40 works
find under gcc 3.1 using the fink installation."

Mr. Eddelbuettel has been working with Octave for a very long time - 
maybe even longer than me (I
started w/ my grad students on it around '92-93-ish), and has made many 
contributions.  If you're
running a Linux system, his advice of "try to install from source" is 
probably your best bet.  It will take
a few hours, but you'll have a much better ability to precisely state 
your problems and, with any luck, obtain
solutions from the octave-help list.

* "Us" is probably incorrect, since I haven't made any active 
contributions to Octave for quite some time now.
